I signed up for a LJ account so that I could post non-anonymous comments on friends' journals. I had kept my own journal on my own server using my own software since the spring on 1998. I never had any desire to post on LJ. I still don't, although in 2005 I created a syndicated account from my RSS feed so that LJ users could read my entries in their friends lists.
